Questions About Chiropractic

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic care is a natural method of health care that has been helping patients just like you for over 100 years. It's based on the premise that good health and mobility rely on a normally functioning nervous system and a healthy spine.

Chiropractic allows the body to heal itself by re-establishing communication between the brain and every tissue and organ in your body. This improves skeletal, muscular and nervous-system disorders without the use of expensive drugs and surgery.

What do spinal joints have to do with my overall health?

Your nerves control how you move and how you feel. Your spinal cord and nerves pass through your spinal column. Your spine can become misaligned as a result of improper lifting, a car accident, or even a vigorous sneeze! This condition is called a subluxation.

A subluxation is a misalignment of one more more bones (vertebrae) in the spine. Spinal subluxations can cause your nerves to become compressed, stretched, or irritated - causing an interference of nerve transmission. That interference affects the communication from the brain to other tissue and organs in the body, which in turn affects the function and healing process of vital parts of the body.

By removing nerve interference with gentle adjustments, Chiropractic allows your body to better heal itself from illness and injury without drugs or surgery!

What can Chiropractic do for me?

Chiropractic can relieve your pain, restore your movement, reduce susceptibility to injury, and slow down or eliminate degenerative disease, such as arthritis, scoliosis, or disc disease.

Is Chiropractic recognized by medical/scientific communities?

The Council of International Organizations of Medical Sciences has stated, "The relationship between the medical and chiropractic professionals worldwide has become increasingly one of mutual respect and collaboration."

In the October 2009 issue of O Magazine, Mehmet Oz, M.D. recommended chiropractic care as a better option than surgery for low back pain, stating, "The research is positive on Chiropractic treatment, physical therapy, and stress relief—they all help ease back pain."

According to Peter Curtis, M.D., with the University of North Carolina, "Doctors of Chiropractic are highly trained practitioners, qualified to diagnose disease entities and to refer patients when the treatment necessary is out of their scope of practice. The basic sciences taught in Chiropractic schools is the equivalent of those taught in medical schools."

Doctors of Chiropractic are well-educated practitioners who are required to complete a minimum of six years of academic education and training. All fifty states recognize the practice of chiropractic and require that Doctors of Chiropractic are board-qualified, licensed, and regulated according to stringent criteria.

Are Chiropractic adjustments painful?

Most patients report that even when they have come into our office with severe pain, spinal adjustments are not painful. More often than not, patients report that they can "feel" the pressure lifting from the spine following an adjustment and often experience immediate relief from some pain. Some patients even tell us they feel a sense of total relaxation after an adjustment.

What's the "popping" sound one may hear during an adjustment?

The sound is nothing more than a partial vacuum created when the vertebrae are manually adjusted. This sound may occur when spinal stress is released; although, pressure may be released with no sound at all.

What conditions do Chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors don't "treat" any disease or condition. We focus on identifying and correcting the source of your problem, rather than "treating" symptoms. That's how we can provide long-term relief for sciatica, neck pain, arthritis, headaches, and lots more!

Is Chiropractic care "safe"?

Chiropractic care from this office is VERY SAFE. That's because it's being delivered by a licensed practitioner and because risk factors are identified in patients before any type of care is administered. Statistics show that patient risk is considerably lower for Chiropractic when compared to medical care, where there are far greater risks associated with prescription drugs and surgery. Positive proof of its safety record is the fact that Chiropractor's malpractice premiums are a fraction of those for medical doctors!

Does Chiropractic really work?

Yes! Oregon and Florida State Worker's Compensation reports showed that back injuries improved in half the time when treated through Chiropractic! Since the U.S. government-sponsored guidelines for low-back pain were published in Dec. 1994, the entire nation has reported astonishing results.

Why do I need Chiropractic care when I'm not in pain?

Although we may get you feeling more comfortable fairly soon, that doesn't mean your injury or problem is fully corrected.

Acute stages of soft tissue injury (muscles, ligaments, nerves, tendons) of the spine may take anywhere from three weeks to three months to fully heal! Depending on how severely the tissue was damaged and the type of stress placed on it, you may need continued care after the pain is gone in order to keep you symptom and pain free.

Are patients really satisfied with Chiropractic care?

The Gallup organization found that 9 out of 10 patients find Chiropractic care effective. One survey of 1000 randomly selected Chiropractic patients in a rural area of Arlington, VA revealed a 99% satisfaction rate!

Patient referrals are the backbone of our practice. To hear more from our satisfied customers, check out our patient testimonials or reviews on YELP!

Do Chiropractors see any value to drugs or surgery?

As your Doctor of Chiropractic, I see value to anything that enhances your well-being and comfort, without jeopardizing your health. While Chiropractic care offers an effective, drug-free, non-surgical alternative, Chiropractors also recognize that no single health care profession offers a panacea to every health care need. Call us to see how we can help you!

Are Chiropractic X-rays safe?

They are safe when conduced by properly trained doctors, and when state and federal regulations are strictly adhered to. Chiropractic education provides more hours of education in diagnostic X-ray than medical and osteopathic pre-doctoral education provides.

Our office has chosen to utilize the services of outside X-ray facilities to ensure the safest and clearest X-rays possible. We most frequently refer to Radnet Medical Imaging and St. Francis Memorial Hospital, depending on your insurance provider and financial situation.

Will I have to go to a Chiropractor forever?

How long would you like to stay healthy, active, and energetic? Depending on your answer, you may benefit from at least a monthly Chiropractic visit to keep your spine in top condition for many years to come.

Just as you must continue to brush, floss, and keep regular dental visits to keep your teeth for a lifetime - taking care of your spine is a lifelong program of care that includes eating right, exercise, proper rest, and regular Chiropractic adjustments.

Why can't I adjust myself?

When you bend and twist a certain way and hear a popping sound, you aren't necessarily giving yourself an "adjustment." Chiropractic works because highly trained practitioners use specific adjustments on specific areas on specialized equipment.

Self-administered manipulation can produce serious problems. A word to the wise: Don't try this at home!
